For Artists

Emerging Writers Group

Black Swan’s annual Emerging Writers’ Group guides a handful of playwrights who display determination, imagination and originality through a script development program with the aim of creating work of an international standard.
Playwrights will have to pitch an idea for a full length play in order to apply for the group. Across the year the plays will receive dramaturgy from Jeffrey Jay Fowler, as well as professional guest playwrights. The scripts will be workshopped by professional actors, and plays of exceptional quality will receive a public reading.
The aim of the EWG is to create work that is suited for production in the Studio Underground at the State Theatre Centre under Black Swan’s banner. Members will need to understand Black Swan’s creative vision, audience and style, but never forget their own voice. Writers from the EWG to have been produced (or to have secured production) include Chris Isaacs (Flood), Gita Bezard (Girl Shut Your Mouth), Will O’Mahony (Tonsils and Tweezers) and Nathaniel Moncrieff (A Perfect Specimen).
Members will be expected to have healthy respect for their own practice and the work of fellow members. This will encourage drive, excellence, achievement and a strong sense of professionalism.
This intake will be expected to have their plays ready for public reading by late November 2016.
REQUIREMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Members are expected to attend a majority of the planned monthly meetings to be eligible for an end of year professional reading of their work.
All members will be invited to attend the first day of rehearsals of all Black Swan scheduled main stage production for the script reading (at the discretion of the Director). All members will receive one complimentary ticket to each Black Swan production, usually scheduled for the evening of the post-show Q+A.
Members of the EWG must meet scheduled deadlines for the development of their script. Every member will need to be ready for constructive feedback, while remembering it is ultimately a supportive environment focused on producing the best work possible.
Invited industry professionals will attend some of the sessions, allowing members to engage with practicing literary artists.
We are looking for the most exciting, enthusiastic and hard working playwrights in Western Australia whose skills are ready to be sharpened and whose careers are ready to take off.
